Lani Wendt Young

We had an amazing visit from Lani Wendt Young as part of the Storylines Tour. She talked to several classes in the library and talked about her journey becoming a writer and about her books. She has written several Young Adult Novels which are always very popular here.
We have just reordered her popular Telesa Novels as they are always out. We will let you know as soon as they arrive.

The story is about a girl Leila who moves to Samoa from America, discovers something major about her past and her unknown powers and basically gets dragged into a world of ancient Samoan mythology which actually is alive and well!

a girl like that

A GIRL LIKE THAT starts off with a bang, as the very first chapter is the car crash that kills Zarin and another important character in the book, Porus.

Zarin goes through awful things such as domestic abuse and sexual assault. She is seen as a girl you “don’t want to be like.” Other girls spread rumors about her, judge her and never let her into their friendship circles. Meanwhile, at home Zarin has to deal with her abusive aunt and complicit uncle, as she is an orphan.

The book is set it Saudi Arabia and is a fascinating and disturbing glance into the gender discrimination and double standards as seen through the eyes of a tennage girl.

A Girl Like That

My Brother's name is Jessica

From the author who wrote The boy in the Stripped Pyjamas comes a book written from the point of view of young teenager Sam who has always idolised his older brother Jason.
Jason is kind, popular, gifted at football and has a lovely girlfriend.

One evening Jason tells his family a secret he has kept his whole life. He tells them that he is not a boy but a girl. Sadly, the family don't take this news very well and the secret Jason has been holding onto for so long threatens to tear the family apart.

My Brother's Name is Jessica shines a much-needed spotlight on the need for empathy, compasssion and the importance for being there for someone coming out as transgender.

Wild

Wild follows the story of Cheryl Strayed, who at the age of 22 loses her mother to cancer; what follows is a series of destructive events such as the breakdown of her marriage and not being as close to her family. One day, some years later, Cheryl makes the impulsive decision to hike the Pacific Crest Trail - an 1,100 mile hike on the West Coast of America. With no prior experience of long-distance hiking, and just the determination and desire to escape all the things that had shattered her life, Cheryl sets out on the trail that sees her life truly change. Wild is a story about physical challenge and spiritual discoveries, all while walking one of America's most famous and beautiful hiking trails.

We have this in the library now. Just ask us if you would like us to find it for you.
The book was also made into a movie starring Reece Witherspoon.

Artemis Fowl the movie!

The first look at the Artemis Fowl movie is here.
The popular children’s fantasy series by Irish author Eoin Colfer has found its way to screen with Disney and director Kenneth Branagh.
The book series follows 12 year-old criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl as he discovers the world of fairies, then, as all 12-year-old master criminals might, decides to rob them. Contrary to prior rumors, the movie will only cover the events of the first book.
The trailer only shows a brief shot of Artemis himself, instead focusing on building up his backstory. There's also a look at one of the fairies that Artemis is up against throughout the film, as a narrator explains.
Artemis Fowl comes out on Aug. 9, 2019.

Review: Spellslinger

Spellslinger Spellslinger by Sebastien de Castell
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Kellen is about to turn 16 and to take an honoured palce in his society and live up to his powerful family's reputation he has to pass four trials to become a spellcaster. He has studied all the spells, he just doesn't have any magic to power them. Just as humiliation and relegation to life as a servant seems certain Kellen meets an Argosi traveller and a fiesty squirrel cat who offer him a different path. This is a classic cowboy story in an arabian nights setting , funny and fresh, the squirrel cat steals the show.
